How it works

Paint coverage is printed on the can. Textured or porous walls and big color changes use more.

We round up to whole gallons because that is how paint is usually sold.

The formula

  • Gallons = ⌈wall area × coats ÷ coverage per gallon⌉
  • Cost = gallons × price per gallon

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure wall area.
  2. Choose the number of coats.
  3. Enter the coverage from your can label.
  4. Enter your local price.

Frequently asked questions

Do I subtract windows and doors?

Subtract large openings. Small ones usually aren't worth subtracting, since the extra covers touch-ups.
