How we calculate
Quantities
Quantities use the geometry shown in each calculator's formula section (area, volume, cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27) plus a waste allowance you can change. Product figures such as bag yield or board width come from cited specifications; where a figure is our own assumption (for example gravel weight per cubic yard or sod pallet coverage), the help text says so.
Default prices
Price fields are marked as assumptions. They are rough typical US figures we chose for illustration, not quotes and not taken from any store's website or data. Your local prices will differ, so we make it easy to type in your own.
Regional adjustment (optional)
If you pick a state or enter a ZIP code, we multiply the default prices by that state's goods price level relative to the US, using the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis Regional Price Parities (2024, "Goods"): multiplier = state goods RPP ÷ US goods RPP. A ZIP is matched to a state by its first three digits, using the Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA-to-county relationship file. This is a broad state-wide index, not a local store quote.
Any price you type in yourself replaces both our default and the regional adjustment.
Privacy of what you enter
The ZIP lookup runs entirely in your browser from a small table shipped with the page. Your ZIP, state and prices are saved only in your browser's local storage and never sent to us. See Privacy.
All results are rough estimates, not a guarantee and not financial advice. Measure carefully and confirm with product labels, your supplier and local codes.
